As far as placement is concerned, ankle tattoos are often chosen for their discreet and versatile nature, allowing for both easy concealment and display. They can symbolize a variety of personal meanings, as a sign of balance and stability, and other meanings ranging from femininity and elegance to resilience and remembrance, and more. To be considered an ankle tattoo, it is primarily doused around the joint connecting the foot and the lower leg, in the zone that allows for up and down (dorsiflexion and plantarflexion) and side-to-side (inversion and eversion) movements. To reiterate, an ankle tattoo is primarily placed along either of the following:
- The front of the ankle, known as the dorsum of the foot. It is the upper surface of the foot.
- The back of the ankle, known as the posterior ankle. It is formed by the lower portion of the tibia (shinbone) and the fibula (calf bone). The posterior ankle also contains the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.
- The outer side of the ankle, is the bony prominence known as the lateral malleolus.
- The inner side of the ankle, is the bony prominence known as the medial malleolus, which is the lower end of the tibia bone.
Preference for the style of tattooing for the ankle is as subjective as the meaning, however there has been an increase in demand for ankle tattoos to be done in the fine line style. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, there is a practical motivation for the fine line style. Ankle tattoos are generally painful becausethe thin skin sits directly over the ankle bone, which provides minimal cushioning for the needle. This area has many nerve endings close to the surface and little fat to absorb the impact, leading to a high-pain sensation. With fine line, there is less needle-pressure when compared to other styles. Understanding this, those with a low threshold for pain prefer the style over alternatives.
What about subject matter? One of the big benefits of choosing the fine line style for an ankle tattoo, is that it allows for nearly any subject (person, place, thing, item, et cetera.) to be tattooed, given that thinner line-work can fit more of a subject on to the small canvas (the ankle) when compared to bolder styles such as blackwork. That being said, common subjects for a fine line ankle tattoo include the following:
- Your initial/s
- Meaningful dates and numbers
- Short (two words) quote
- Hearts
- Nature themes (trees, flowers, etc.)
- Nautical things (anchors, ships, etc.)
- Celestial beings (sun, moon, stars)
- Wings (as in Hermes, the messenger god and god of travelers, who had wings on his ankles)
