As far as placement is concerned, there isn’t necessarily a universal meaning for a wrist tattoo. Its significance is subjective and personal. That being said, the placement does indeed act as a constant, visible reminder of whatever the wearer intends of it, be in regards to inner strength, a cherished memory, a personal commitment, a cultural tribute, or something else.  To be considered a wrist tattoo, it is primarily doused around the joint where the forearm bones (radius and ulna) end and the carpal bones (the eight small bones that form the wrist) begin, while the carpal bones end and the metacarpal bones (which form the palm and fingers) start. To reiterate, a wrist tattoo is primarily placed along either of the following:

  • The inside of the wrist, known as the palmar aspect or volar aspect.
  • The outer sides of the wrist, specifically the area on the pinky side, is referred to as the ulnar side.
  • The back of the wrist, known as the dorsal side.

Style of tattooing for the wrist is also a subjective preference, however there has been a dramatic rise in demand wrist tattoos to be done in the fine line style through recent years. Not only does it look good, there is a practical motivation for the fine line style. Wrist tattoos are generally painful because the skin is thin, the area is close to the bones, and there’s a high concentration of nerve endings and major nerve pathways in the wrist. The lack of cushioning from fat and muscle makes the sensation of the tattoo needle more intense and amplified compared to other parts of the arm (and body). The application of the fine line style offers less needle-pressure when compared to other styles, so those with a low threshold for pain enjoy greater peace of mind going into their session with a tattooist.

What about subject matter? One of the big benefits of choosing the style addressed here today, is that it allows for nearly any noun (person, place, thing, et cetera.) to be tattooed, given that thinner line-work can fit more on to the small canvas when compared to bolder styles like blackwork. That being said, common subjects for a fine line wrist tattoo include the following:

  • Names of loved ones
  • Your initial/s
  • Meaningful dates and numbers
  • Short (two words) quote
  • Hearts
  • Outline of a beloved pet
  • Flowers
  • Celestial things (sun, moon, stars)

Lastly, wrist tattoos also work great as couples, family, of friend tattoos. They can be done together within a relatively short group session at our tattoo studio (if living in or visiting Vancouver BC) and can be aesthetically displayed side-by-side for Instagram/TikTok with ease.
